Program is not a heartworm preventative, but is given once a month for flea control in cats and dogs.  Program controls fleas by blocking their reproductive cycle; it does not kill them.  When a flea feeds on your pet's blood, it ingests the drug which prevents the flea from reproducing.  Program is available in a pill form for dogs, and a pill form as well as a liquid that can be mixed with canned food for cats.

If your pet experiences the rare flea, we feel that this treatment is adequate, and that the drug is very safe.  Because the flea must bite your pet for this drug to be effective, in those pets that suffer from flea allergies we generally recommend a topical product such as Advantage that actually prevents the flea bite from occurring.  For Program to be most effect, every pet in the household, even those that do not go outdoors, should be treated on a regular basis.  For clients who are concerned about residues from topical drugs, Program is often the drug of choice for flea control.

Program is sold in packages of 6 doses, with prices ranging from $36/6 pack for cats, and $34 to $37/6 pack for dogs.
