HeartGard/HeartGard Plus

This is an oral, once a month, soft chewable treat that is very well taken by dogs.  The cost is $3.00 to $6.00 per dose for dogs weighing under 100lbs.  It's available in tablet form for the rare dog that doesn't accept the chewable.  It is also available as a monthly chewable for cats ($4.00 per monthly dose), although our experience is that many cats do not accept this well.  For this reason, Revolution may prove to be the best option for cats.

HeartGard Plus is a form of HeartGard with an added ingredient for roundworms and hookworms.    It costs the same as regular HeartGard.  Because of the added benefits of protection against fairly common intestinal parasites, we are generally recommending this form be used on a regular basis. We have found it to be as safe and well-tolerated as the regular HeartGard.  It does not treat intestinal whipworms, so in cases where these are a concern, Interceptor is generally the preventive of choice.

Both HeartGard and HeartGard Plus are well established drugs and have a very good safety and efficacy record.
